Sam Hunter – Founder of Big Name PR

1. Tell us who you are and what you create?

Big Name PR is a digital platform connecting musicians with curators to amplify their music. Our website simplifies how independent artists reach music bloggers, playlist makers, and radio hosts. I taught myself to code to build this from scratch—it’s my way of supporting grassroots musicians and the curators who help them thrive.

2. What inspired you to start your journey?

Five years ago, some friends and I ran a music review blog spotlighting emerging artists. Quickly, we saw the struggle independent musicians faced—spending countless hours creating music, only to struggle to gain listeners or press coverage. They’d send generic emails out of desperation, unsure how to effectively market themselves. I wanted to solve this challenge by creating a single platform to connect artists directly with curators in a meaningful, affordable way.

3. What is the problem you’re solving?

Independent musicians pour their hearts into music but often lack the knowledge or resources to promote it effectively. Traditional methods involve paying individually to reach curators, which is costly and inefficient. Big Name PR allows artists to submit their music and story once, connecting them instantly to multiple curators eager to discover fresh talent. Curators benefit, too, as they can easily find and share new music supported by sustainable advertising partnerships.

4. What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

Being a solo founder has meant juggling multiple roles: developer, marketer, strategist—all at once. Learning web development from scratch to build Big Name PR was particularly challenging. Balancing growth has also been tricky—attracting curators first so artists join an active community. Despite these hurdles, feedback from artists and curators fuels my determination.

5. How has being part of Impact Brixton helped?

Joining Impact Brixton gave me a supportive startup community in Brixton, alongside essential services like a professional virtual office address. Being part of this community keeps me inspired and connected with other creative entrepreneurs.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new creators?

Big Name PR started as a simple blog with friends. I had no clue it would evolve into a startup platform; that happened by diving in, learning, and adapting along. So don’t wait for the “perfect” moment or permission to create something – just begin with what you have.

Also, be prepared to learn new skills and wear many hats. When I began building Big Name PR, I never imagined I’d become a “web developer”. But learning those new skills was hugely empowering. It taught me that, as creators and entrepreneurs, we’re capable of more than we think – we must be open to learning.
