Impact Brixton Host Spotlight: Rachael Palmer

by | Jan 17, 2024

Impact Brixton is a welcoming workspace providing affordable virtual office services, fully serviced private offices, creative coworking and educational workshops to support and empower entrepreneurs to thrive. And it couldn’t run without our fabulous hosts!

Our hosts are the beating heart of our organisation. They look after the general running of the space, process all the mail we receive for our virtual office community, respond to every enquiry we receive, and welcome members and guests with a smile. And what’s more, all of our brilliant hosts are also working on their own incredible enterprises alongside their role at Impact Brixton. They’re fearless creative entrepreneurs, and we’re so thrilled to have them on our team.

So to celebrate our incredible hosts and all their hard work, we’re shining a spotlight on our team here at Impact Brixton. First up, meet the brilliant Rachael Palmer – General Manager of Impact Brixton.

Rachael Palmer, General Manager of Impact Brixton and Founder of Black Maven CIC

Hi, Rachael! Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

Hi! I’m Rachael Palmer, General Manager of Impact Brixton. It’s my job to make sure that Impact Brixton runs like clockwork – I support our brilliant Host Managers, making sure that they have everything they need to create the best coworking space in London. I check in with our lovely private office tenants to see if there’s anything more we can be doing to make this their favourite place to work. I liaise with our landlords at the iconic Brixton Village to make sure that our space stays warm and welcoming. And every morning I make sure that they kitchen is well stocked with tea and coffee – because I know that no freelancer can get down to work without a cuppa!

When you’re not General Managing Impact Brixton, what do you do?

I am Founder of BlackMaven CIC, which is an organisation that provides Project Management and capacity support primarily for Black and Global Majority Founders, helping them to create positive impact and social change. I’m particularly passionate about supporting young people with their social entrepreneurial dreams, visions and goals.

As well as running BlackMaven, I also co-host a weekly talk show on Colourful Radio: The Business Mix show, and I’ve recently co-founded Black Nail Techs UK, which will be the first comprehensive directory of all Black nail artists in the UK, platforming their skills and services. This year, I’m also starting a new project supporting Black Female Founders with their business skills and entrepreneurial wellbeing.

I do a bit of freelance training and workshop facilitation, too. It’s not all hard work, though – I love a bottomless brunch!

When did you join Impact Brixton, and why did you decide to join?

I joined Impact Brixton as a Host back in 2016. A friend told me about the hosting opportunities available at Impact Brixton, but I was a busy mum and didn’t get around to applying. Then one day I realised that I could tell the time by what was on the kids’ TV channel Cbeebies… and I knew I needed to get out of the house more! So I decided to apply the be a host, and now here I am – General Manager. It’s been an amazing journey!

What’s your favourite story from your time at Impact Brixton?

There have been so many good times, but moving into the iconic Brixton Village building on Electric Lane was a pivotal moment in IB history! It was like moving out of your mum’s house for the first time – we finally had a space all of our own where we could paint the walls, put our furniture wherever we wanted, and move at our own pace. It was having the total freedom to create a space that looked and felt exactly how we dreamed, creating a chilled out workspace that’s welcoming and inclusive.
