So to celebrate our amazing community and all their hard work, we’re shining a spotlight on our brilliant members! First up, meet the incredible Andry Anastasis McFarlane.

Andry Anastasis McFarlane, Founder of The Learning Moment

Hi, Andry! Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

Hi! I’m Andry Anastasis McFarlane, Founder of The Learning Moment. We’re a small, female-led diverse team that supports people to thrive at work through learning. We work with teams, organisations and individuals to develop their soft skills, teamwork and communication. I’ve also written the Really Resilient Guide – a book that supports you to thrive at work.

When did you join the coworking community at Impact Brixton?

I joined Impact Brixton way back when it was setting up. I went to a trial day in Lambeth Town Hall when Impact Brixton was based there. Coworking was such  a new concept at the time – we were really on the edge of that trend. I didn’t really know what coworking was, but I was curious enough, and there was a little spark of interest in me. I love that moment when you sense you are on the edge of something new. Now Impact Brixton is one of my favourite homes!

What’s your favourite story from your time at Impact Brixton?

I couldn’t choose just one, so I’ve narrowed it down to two for you!

One of my favourite stories is coming out of lockdown and back to Impact Brixton. Lockdown had been a busy time for me, but I had felt really isolated towards the end, and many of us also had online fatigue. I was digging deep to be resilient in the face of the chaos we had all faced. The first day I went back to Impact Brixton for a coworking day, I was doing some standing-up work – and I was so overjoyed I was actually dancing by my laptop. I was so happy to be back in this great community workspace with wonderful people. I felt so connected again.

My second favourite story is taking part in my first ever global livestream thanks to one of the best ‘dream teams’ I have co-created through Impact Brixton. A small group of us Impact Brixton members had got together to design and co-deliver a programme called Grow your Own Leaders (GYOL). The programme was based on MIT’s u.lab and worked to find small local  innovative ways to tackle food poverty in Lambeth. It was a powerful time; creative and eye-opening, and we had a contagious energy for local innovation. We co-launched London’s first ever community fridge in Pop Brixton, and four other local food projects.

In the middle of that GYOL programme, the MIT teaching team came over and collaborated with us. We took part in a live stream with MIT to 12000 people all over the globe! It was my first ever live stream, and it was a moment of real excitement and intensity! Connecting with people all over the world, who were also doing their best collaboratively to tackle tough challenges in their communities. I will never forget that – the buzz, the teamwork, the impact… taking part in something innovative and global as a result of the small local connections formed at Impact Brixton.
